How to Shame Someone who Owes you Money [7 Effective Tips]

Debtors are shameless. Unless you are from another planet apart from Earth, someone must have owed you money and, like most cases, refused to pay. It becomes as if the person who borrowed money from you in their sad state isn’t the same person telling you to go away when you come back to get your money from them. In this post, I will show you how to shame someone who owes you money when they don’t want to pay it back.

Remember, these are some cruel tactics, and you should employ them when you have exhausted all other options for getting your money back.

I believe some companies help track debtors, but you are often required to pay over your nose for their services. Sometimes, the money your debtor owes you isn’t even enough to hire a debt recovery company. So the best option is to retrieve the money yourself.

I will share some ways to shame someone who owes you money and force them to pay.

7 Ways to Shame Someone who owes you money

Before you shame someone who owes you money, you should be sure that they have the resources to pay it back. In many personal cases, people who borrowed cash from me didn’t have the means to pay it back. I had to learn my lesson and forgot about it.

You may have heard a quote saying, “You can’t shame the shameless.” When someone is in deep sh*t, and you try to shame them, people turn against you.

So be sure you have enough proof that your debtor has the resources to pay but prefers not to pay you your money.

So here are some shaming tactics;

Leave them stranded

Sometimes when my debtor doesn’t want to pay, I pretend as if I have forgotten about it. I take the person out and let them order expensive meals while I eat something light and cheap.

When it comes to payment, I demand split bills, and in most cases, it embarrasses them.

This is like a one-time solution before I send them a threatening message, demanding that my money or something worse follow suit.

Send them a personal threat message.

Before a personal threat message, you might go through using some of these asking-for-help messages to plead for your money back.

Most times, debtors give a deaf ear to your pleas, asking them to pay back the money they owe. In many cases, I would suggest you send them a threat message explaining your next step.

This would also help you gain public sympathy when people realize you gave the debtor a clue about your next step.

Also, they wouldn’t feign ignorance and decide to sue you because you shamed them publicly.

So I recommend you give them a personal warning of what you intend to do. It would serve as a final warning.

Threaten them on Social Media

Before you shame them, threaten them first and gauge their reaction. Look out for a platform on which they are quite popular. The one you have mutual friends with your debtor should also influence the best platform for use.

If they are on Twitter, threaten to call them out with proof of your conversation with them.

Here’s what your typical threat post should look like;

“If you know you owe me, please pay up. I promise to put out your picture and everyone close to you until you pay me my money. You have been using my money to gallivant and buy many expensive things, yet you don’t want to pay back the money you owe. Please pay back in 3 days, or I take it up in a more extreme manner.”

Send them a link to show that you aren’t bluffing after you make a threat post on any of their preferred social media platforms.

Post his Contact on Social Media

Another method you can use to shame someone who owes you money is their contact on social media and write a powerful caption about the situation on the ground. You can use forums like Reddit or Twitter.

Make a simple but emotionally provoking post and tell people to call his number and beg him to pay up. A sample post would be like this;

“He came to me broke and was requesting for money. I told him I had just my kid’s emergency fund on me. He promised to pay back in 3 days, and since then, he has been living a good life, while my child is almost kicked out of school. All I did was to help a fellow human. Would you please help me call him and tell him to pay back my money? His number is “+1 222-456- xxx” {insert his number}”.

Trolls would feed on it and most likely blow it out of proportion, forcing your debtor to become embarrassed.

At this point, your debtor becomes aware that you have all the time in the world to shame and cajole your way into them paying, so they will become more attentive.

Put up his Image and Phone Number on Social Media

Posting their pictures and phone number is another perfect way to shame someone who owes you money but doesn’t want to pay up.

If your debtor is yet to respond, the next step would be to put up the debtor’s image, phone number, and links to their other social media profiles.

On the picture, carefully inscribe “Fraudster” at the top of the image, then write a good description for it.

When writing a good description, let it ooze emotions and let people understand while you chose this option as your last resort.

Advertise your Debtor as a Fraudster

Anyone who collects money from you under pretense and refuses to pay is a fraudster. Take your debtor’s picture and advertise him as a fraudster on places like Craigslist, eBay, your WhatsApp status, and even on your Instagram feed.

People who recognize the will reach out to the debtor, and others will try as much as possible to avoid the person.

Approach them at their workplace

The last place people want to feel embarrassed is at their workplace. If the sum of money in question is quite huge, I don’t care, but I will embarrass the debtor at their place of work.

In extreme cases, I can have a word with their superior at where they work and explain the situation to them.

Some managers would want to wade into the situation, which would shame them for failing to pay their debt. This is another way to shame someone who owes you money but doesn’t want to pay.

Conclusion

Before doing all these I have mentioned above, I suggest you give them ample time to pay up and continually remind them of what you will do before you do it.

If the money in question is small, I suggest you learn your lesson and move on. But if the amount of money involved is huge, then you can do all these to shame someone who owes you money.

Either way, I advise you never to lend out money unless you can afford to lose it.
